Are you an Overthinker?

If so, have you ever considered who’s voice your overthinker has?

People say moving house is one of the most stressful things we can do. Having just moved into our new home, I disagree, I found the experience many things but not stressful. I wonder if that is because I am a planner? I love a new project and I really love a plan to go with the project. So, many lists were created and the joy of ticking those tasks off was super helpful.

What I did notice was that my overthinker was very present. The little voice in my head that is never very helpful but constantly asking "what happens if it doesn't work out", "what if the house sale falls through at the last minute", "how will I cope", "what if the neighbours are awful", on and on....... Sound familiar?

Overthinking is a thief of our time, it's hard to focus on anything else, it can hold us in the past, constantly questioning our decisions, it can make us scared to move forward and left unchecked it can significantly affect our mental health and wellbeing.

As a coach I often work with people who are trying to master their overthinker and one of the questions I might ask is "who's voice does your overthinker have"? Mine is a 15 year old me, worried about what the world will be like and how will I cope all alone? Sometimes my Negative Nancy, the person in my past who always said things would never work out.

Just before we moved, someone asked me a question and it has been a life changer for me, so I wanted to share it. Not only does this question quieten my overthinker but in doing that it saves me valuable time, stress and lets me get a good night’s sleep.

"what if it all goes ok?"

A simple but great question. It not only stopped my overthinker dead in its tracks, but it also made me start to think about all the positive things that could happen. This then takes my brain to a very pleasant space, forward thinking, exciting, full of feel good endorphins and just made me feel more positive about everything. It sounds simple - it was. I would invite you to try it as one of the many tools we can use to support our overthinkers.

If you are interested in mastering your overthinker, finding out more about coaching or looking to make a change please do reach out, I'd love to hear from you.
