One of the things I love most about my job is the wisdom my clients bring to our sessions. The insights they share often leave a lasting impact, and I find myself reflecting on them long after our conversations end.
A recurring theme in coaching is self-care—whether it's achieving work-life balance, managing stress and anxiety, or simply ensuring that we show up as our best, most authentic selves.
Recently, a client summed it up perfectly: "So, it's all about protecting the triangle."
If I could get this printed on a t-shirt, I’d hand them out to everyone! This phrase refers to an exercise I often do with clients, where we explore Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
The Foundations Matter
At its core, Maslow’s hierarchy reminds us that to function at our best, we must take care of our fundamental needs first. Before we focus on growth, success, or personal fulfilment, we need to protect the base of the triangle by asking ourselves:
✅ Have I eaten?
✅ Am I hydrated?
✅ Did I get enough sleep?
✅ Do I feel safe—physically, emotionally, and mentally? Am I regulating my nervous system to avoid fight, flight, or freeze mode?
I like to add mindful breathing here too. Mindful breathing helps regulate our nervous system, allowing us to feel grounded and safe. When we take intentional deep breaths, we send a message to our brain that we are okay—helping us move forward with clarity and confidence.
So, I’ll say it again: Protect the Triangle. Maybe I really should get that t-shirt printed!
If you are interested in coaching and exploring ways to support your wellbeing, tend to those foundations of the triangle, please do reach out, I'd love to hear from you.
